The Kuna Authorities

The Kuna peoples are organized in a dynamic fashion that safeguards both loyalty and respect to their traditions and their roots, as well as an openness to the national society. Each of these facets is the responsibility of one of two collective authorities, namely, the Kuna General Congress, and the Kuna Culture Authority. They aim at working side-by-side for the well being of their communities.

The Kuna General Congress has the responsibility of representing the Kuna peoples in the context of nation-state politics. It assumes the task of crafting the legislation that will insure Kuna autonomy. It also administers a host of social, educational and environmental projects. Below this text you will find a link to the General Congress' official site. There you can read messages and statements from past and current leaders, see Kuna legislations and other important information.

The traditional and spiritual life of the Kuna rests in the hands of the Kuna Culture Authority. These highly respected leaders share and preserve wisdom about Kuna ways of doing things, expertise about Kuna cosmology, and also look after relations with traditional leaders of other indigenous communities. A link to the cyberspace of the Kuna Culture Authority is also given below. Click on it to be taken directly to their site with information about Kuna traditions and spirituality, about their expressive culture, and programs that promote their cultural life.
